The Seattle Globalist is a daily online publication that covers the connections between local and global issues here in Seattle. We highlight diverse voices and train the next generation of media makers.
Our mission is to elevate diverse voices through media.
We believe that creating opportunities for diverse people to report on and write about issues important to them, through a platform that engages a broad public audience, will help create a vibrant media environment that truly represents the world we live in. We work toward this vision by:
- Cultivating new voices: We provide journalism training and publishing opportunities for youth through our Apprenticeship program and Globalist Youth workshops, support innovative international journalism projects by media makers in our community and provide editorial mentorship to non-professional journalists interested in writing for The Seattle Globalist.
- Acting as a bridge: We cover the intersection between local and global issues, connect professional and non-professional journalists, and fill the space between Seattle’s ethnic press and mainstream media.
- Starting conversations: The Seattle Globalist is a catalyst for community conversation about politics, immigration, diversity, education and more, and it’s a place where all perspectives are welcomed and fostered.
In 2014, U.S. newsrooms were less than 14% staffed by ethnic minorities: barely 1/3 the numbers people of color represent in our nation’s population overall. We want that to change.
Writers for The Seattle Globalist are 67% people of color, 73% female, and 45% immigrants or first generation Americans. Our editorial team is two-thirds women of color. Our staff and board is 83% female and 58% people of color.
What We Do
The Seattle Globalist publishes a daily news site focused on international connections in the Pacific Northwest. Follow us on Twitter for regular updates. We host regular community events, including journalism workshops; happy hours; travel slideshows and more! Check out our Facebook page for upcoming events.
We support innovative international journalism projects by media makers in our community (such as BARZAN, Slum Rising, Generation Putin and Cost of Gender).
We provide journalism training and publishing opportunities for underserved youth through our Apprenticeship program and Globalist Youth workshops. Check out our Globalist Youth page for information on upcoming programs.
